H1N1, first named Swine Flu, is rapidly spreading throughout the world. This is a frightening event that we are watching unfold in front of us and we are all on edge. Cases of the flu virus are popping up right here in Central Ohio. Two cases are titled 'probable' in Franklin County. The Ohio State University issued a statement that one of those cases is an employee of OSU Medical Center, but it was contracted outside of work. The second is an adult female and there are rumors that it could be a Columbus city employees who works in the water department. Both of these cases have yet to be confirmed by the Centers for Disease Control. Five other cases are being investigated here in Columbus and nearby Ross County officials are waiting to hear if 2 suspected cases they have submitted for testing are confirmed or denied for Swine Flu.
The World Health Organization has just raised the Pandemic Alert Level to 5. What exactly does that mean for us?
Basically, as Americans, it doesn't really affect us as it will other countries. The U.S. is already doing everything possible to prevent the spread of H1N1. Changing the alert to a Level 5 is meant to warn other countries who haven't started preparation or prevention. There has only been 1 death to H1N1 in the U.S. and it was a 23-month-old from Mexico who was seeking treatment in Texas. Our U.S. healthcare professionals and our healthcare system is stronger and more advanced than many other countries.
The death rate to H1N1 in Mexico has slowed dramatically in the past few days. Mexican officials report 159 deaths from pneumonia, which may have been caused by the virus. The same officials only confirm 7 deaths from the Swine Flu, H1N1, virus.
As Ann Curry mentioned on Twitter this morning, we should worry when healthy individuals start to drop.
This said, we should still be cautious. If you or a family member feels ill, see a doctor. Wash your hands regularly. Be smart.

WHO Raises Pandemic Alert To Level 5, Probable Cases In Columbus
Posted by Mandy Labels: Columbus, Google Map, H1N1, Ohio, OSU Medical Center, Swine FluWe took the dogs to Highbanks Park Saturday--a beautiful 70 degree Ohio day. The pet trail is 3.5 miles, but 1x around didn't seem to exhaust Bobbie and Coley, so we had to do it twice. Afterward, we took them to the Dog Park at Alum Creek State Park, which they absolutely loved! We tried to get Bobbie to jump in the lake, but she refused to go any further than where she could touch the ground. I don't think she knows she can swim.
I love me some Laurinaitis!

Friends of the Shelter
Posted by Mandy Labels: Columbus, Dog Rescue, dog's, Franklin County Dog Shelter, Friends of the ShelterMany may not know, but I am a volunteer and the social media coordinator for Friends of the Shelter. Basically, we raise money to fund the off-site infirmary, foster program, as well as other programs, for the Franklin County Dog Shelter. Our group is small, but we are mighty and raise enough to help hundreds of homeless and injured dogs each year.
